I know it's an uncomfortable topic, especially to parents of younger children, but honestly, it's something we need to address, head on, without pause.
Children ARE being abducted. Over 800,000 children EVERY YEAR. It's a scary thought, and EVERY parent says "it'll never happen to my child." It does... happen. To those parents. And for too many parents, their child never comes back. Now as a society, we have been blessed, and found children, many, many years later. The Elizabeth Smart's and Amanda Berry's... but there are WAY too many that aren't found... One from my area always sticks in my head, because I'd recently had a child around the time she went missing. Teekah Lewis last seen on January 23, 1999. I know, because it was a few days before I was scheduled to leave for Canada to get my laser eye surgery done, and when we went to cross, they almost didn't let us, because we didn't bring our son's birth certificate with us. (my son's father went with me) And they pulled us out of the van, and did LOTS of checks on us, and there were posters of Teekah all over the place.
Now, I tell myself all the time, that it can't happen to me, because I keep a good eye on my son. We even have a 'mantra' that we say to him as a reminder to stay safe and close...
"(If)I can't see you, (and) you can't see me,
WE HAVE A PROBLEM"
The problem is, that he is special needs, and 7, and a boy, and curious... I can't tell you how many times he'll see a toy and walk over to get it... and BAM he's out of my sight.
I really think I've lost about 10 years off my life from episodes like this.
That's the moment... You FREEZE... And then yell his name, and parents everywhere look at you with the dread in their eyes... and you yell his name again, and PRAY that he responds...
And just before you SCREAM his name a third time, he either pops his head out, or says "I'm over here".
Then you rush to him, hug him, then SCOLD HIM.

A DNA profile is a genetic fingerprint unique to each individual. DNA Diagnostics Center (DDC) uses our state-of-the-art laboratory to construct the DNA profile. Once completed, a certificate of results is created and signed by one of our PhD's. The certificate provides key genetic markers that police use for investigations.
ChildProtect by DNA is provided by DNA Diagnostics Center, the largest private DNA company in the world and #1 hospital recommended in the US
How is a DNA profile used in an abduction case?
When an item is found that contains traces of DNA, the item needs to be compared to the missing person's DNA to determine a match. If the missing person's DNA has not been profiled, DNA collected at the scene has nothing to be compared to.
Did you know?
- Law enforcement agencies state the first 3 hours of a missing child’s search are the most important
- A DNA profile is a Genetic Fingerprint and every person’s is unique
- Every profile is signed by a PhD when it leaves the DDC laboratory
- A DNA profile is used by police when they find an item (saliva) that contains traces of DNA. By having a DNA profile on hand, the police have something to compare against. If there is no DNA profile, police need to collect DNA from the child’s home and send it to a laboratory to get the profile.
