RedBox Instant Streaming Review

Upon signing up for the RedBox Instant Streaming campaign through BzzAgent, I immediately went to the redbox instant site and signed up with my special code.
The process to sign-up was very easy.  Because I’ve used the kiosk before, some of my information was already readily available using my email.  Because it was a trial, my cc# was taken, but not accessed, which I like.
Then, I was taken to the site.
The first thing I noticed was that there is a minimal number of movies available.  Because I use Netflix also, this is a problem for me, but since it’s in Beta, we’re giving it some leeway.
We decided to watch a family movie.  We chose Madeline, since it’s one of the few movies that’s available to watch that is NOT instantly watchable via Netflix.
When we attempted to play it, we got some error message that said something about a license.  I checked in the help section, but there was nothing about that specific message.  I went into my account section and updated my address information (since RedBoxInstant is not available out of the country, I thought maybe they had my info wrong)
For some reason, when I tried it again, Madeline started playing (yay!)
However, once we started watching it, it was frequently pausing (buffering?) and eventually paused and would not restart.  We refreshed the page, but nothing…it was stuck.
At this point, my husband and child were pretty bored with waiting, and we ended up going to Netflix.
Later on, I tried to get back in, and every time I tried, it kicked me out of the site and back to the 'gatekeeper' (which is where you have to enter in your invite code) making it VERY difficult to watch a movie, since I couldn't get in.  I had to re-enter my code several times... rather annoying, I might add.
The price is comparable to Netflix, which is a good thing, however, until they have more movies available, I’m not sure that I’ll be switching.  Also, having kiosk credits is great, but since my Transmission died on New Years, I don’t think I’ll be walking to the nearest one (which is about a half-mile away)
All in all, I’m glad I tried, and eventually, I’m sure that I’ll use it again, but right now, I’m ok with where I’m at.

One great feature (which I don't use myself) is that there is an app for it too!  So you can watch it on the go!

Interested in signing up and trying it out?  Visit the RedBoxInstant site, and request a code!  If you do, all I ask is that you come back here, and tell me what you think!

Disclosure:  I am a BzzAgent.  I received a free trial to RedBoxInstant (and 4 free kiosk rentals) for signing up for this campaign.  I am in no way required to write a positive review, only an honest review.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Check out my other reviews!

  1. I don't have any hardware that will allow me to stream (just desktop computer). I don't watch many movies and the ones I do are usually from the library. Free is very good.

    2. You'd be surprised at what your desktop computer can do!! I use my laptop to stream myself (can't afford to buy one of those fancy-shmancy one's that you use on your tv)
With redbox, you don't have to download anything, or have any special equipment (nor do you with netflix).
      But I'd fully agree...FREE IS GOOD!!! ;)

  3. I was not aware that Redbox had streaming now. Sounds like they still have some kinks to work out. Wonder if they will be able to get up there with NetFlix. We have NetFlix too so I probably won't be using RedBox Instant Streaming anytime soon. I really appreciate your honest review of the service.

  4. I have signed up for the redbox free month trial and I do like the price for the streaming service along w/ being able to take home up to 4 dvds or games within that month. If you rent just one movie per week at their redbox kiosks you'd already be paying $4 right there, so basically you're actually getting streaming service for 4 bucks per month. BUT!.... the caveat ... redbox's streaming service and their device apps are unfortunately not yet ready for primetime! Even with a very fast internet connection the streaming videos are constantly pausing, buffering. For example, a 2 hour movie will take about 2 and 1/2 hours to watch. Of course, this is unacceptable and utterly frustrating, but on top of that, there are a myriad of other issues and bugs that need to be ironed out. There is still a much-too-limited selection of movies, and some of those available movies won't even load at all. The end user interfaces on their apps and website are somewhat clunky feeling and inconsistent. There are constant errors from the apps (especially the beta-ware xbox app), really too many to mention. Another annoyance are the missing previews and trailers, and there are some movies listed as available for streaming but in actuality are only available at a kiosk, and on and on. I DO hope that redbox can address these problems quickly and add to their inventory, maybe even include some TV shows! If they can do that, and maintain the low price, then I'l remain a customer as they go through adolescence.
