Review: Devo for the Rest of Us

When I chose this book to review, I really liked that it was aimed towards "the rest of us"  I don't know about you, but I didn't grow up churched.  I didn't know God before accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord & Savior.  So when I read some authors books, I have a harder time following, primarily, because they're geared towards people like my husband, people who've been in the church since before birth!

Devo For The Rest of Us aims to allow EVERYONE in.  You're not held back by understanding of the Word, nor spiritual growth, nor how much you read the bible.

This book is clearly written for the everyday man. (or woman!!)  I truly appreciate the comedic style in which it was written.
The author has done a great job grabbing your attention, and keeping it.
He discusses everything from feeding your child, to the X-men to the Brady Bunch & movies you're sure to have seen.
Each chapter is followed with appropriate scripture & follow up information that allows you to continue to learn.

I am excited to share this book with the saints in my church, and excitedly await their thoughts.
This is surely going on my bookshelf (vs the local Buy Nothing page!) because I will read it again!

From Frank Viola's Blog, Beyond Evangelical
Here is an excerpt of Vince Antonucci's interview:

Explain the title, Devo for the Rest of Us.
Vince Antonucci: There are great devotional books out there. But I’m not sure if there are many devotional books designed for people who don’t typically read devotional books. Or many written that will make you laugh out loud. This is a devotional book for the rest of us – for those who want more of God, deeper spiritual lives, but maybe don’t typically use a devotional. (And who like to laugh.)
Tell us a bit about the experiences that shaped the insights in the book.
Vince Antonucci: I came from a completely unchurched, non-Christian background. In fact, my mother is Jewish and my father a professional poker player gambling addict, so they never took me to church. Then I went on to start two churches, both totally focused on Jesus’ mission of seeking and saving the lost. 70% of the people we’ve reached have been unchurched, non-Christians.
All of this led me to see the critical importance of new Christians understanding and living out the foundations of our faith. What has shocked me is how many long-time Christians don’t understand or live out the foundations of our faith. The topics I cover in Devo For The Rest Of Us are the essentials. Who is God? What does it mean to have your identity in Christ? Why and how do we share our faith? Why is Jesus the only way to Heaven? How does God transform us? How do we live holy lives in a sinful world?

And finally, here is the info from the back of the book, which is ALWAYS helpful when learning if this book is truly what you're looking for!

You are loved by a limitless God! Yet many of us don’t live our everyday lives in that reality. The “rest of us” subconsciously believe half-truths about God and ourselves, sabotaging our lives in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. For the next forty days, spend time every day discovering what life can be like in light of God’s love for you. Explore how God can meet your deepest yearnings, how your life can make a difference, and how important it is to connect with an active community of faith. For the next forty days, discover a God for the rest of us.

I received this book in exchange for an HONEST review through Tyndale House.  There was no agreement for a positive review.  I was not compensated in any other way.
